Strand was introduced to photography by the renowned social documentarian Lewis Hine, who instilled in him an understanding of the photograph as a powerful tool that should be used for the betterment of humanity. In March 2016, the V&A will present the first retrospective of the American artist Paul Strand (1890-1976) in the UK for over 30 years. Revered as one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century, Strand defined the way fine art and documentary photography is understood and practiced today. Among Paul Strand's early works, Wall Street is recognized by collectors and scholars as an icon of modernism, an image that redefined the art of photography. This world-famous image is among the most often reproduced masterworks of photography. From vintage prints of his street photography in 1910s New York (including his early masterpiece Wall Street, 1915) to images of rural France in the 1970s, radical explorations of abstract photography, human form and moving image (Strand’s 1921 short documentary Manhatta is largely thought of as the first avant-garde film), the show traces Strand’s career as a photographer while fostering Paul Strand's Wall Street.

The terms “Wall Street” and “Main Street” get tossed around a lot in conversations about the financial industry. But not everyone has a clear understanding of how they differ — especially when it comes to investing their money.
